Buddha Purnima/Jayanthi is a festival that marks Lord Gautama Buddha's birthday. Buddha was a influential spiritual leader during and after his lifetime. Those who follow Buddha's preaching are called Buddhists and their religion is called Buddhism. Buddhism is spread all over the world and mainly in Asia.
Buddha Purnima ( Purnima means Full moon ) is celebrated during the full moon day in the month of May every year. Different Buddhist communities may celebrate this occasion on different dates because Buddhist lunar calendar can be interpreted in different ways. In the year 1950 a conference was held in Colombo where they came up with the plan of celebrating this occasion.
