Hong Kong : Postal History at a Glance

The postal History of Hong Kong dates back to 1841. From then till 1846 it was located in Garden road. Later it was relocated to Queen's road Central. I heard that it was one of the first buildings along the Queen's central. Then in the year 1911 it was moved to Des Voeux Road and Pedder Road, which is named after Mr. Pedder who was the first Harbor Master of the Port.   It is fondly known as "The old lady of Pedder Street". The GPO building is considered an architectural masterpiece.

Hong Kong Post issued a stamp on 29th April 2014 depicting the Pedder Road GPO building, which was operational from 1911 to 1976. It is an odd shaped stamp issued under the title "A Journey Through Hong Kong's Postal History".

Below is the reverse side of the above miniature sheet, where you can see the shape of the stamp clearly.

The current GPO is in Conaught Place near Jordine House, Central Hong Kong.

Crystal Clad Stamp: Austria, HongKong, China

Hong Kong, China and Austria has jointly issued a World’s first Crystal-Clad stamp in August 2006. 

Both Austria and Hong Kong are famous for their panoramic views.  Any festivities or celebrations cannot be complete without fireworks.  And fireworks on the backdrop of beautiful panoramas are a feast for our eyes.  So they selected the fireworks on the backdrop of two important panoramic landmarks of the two countries.

Swarovski is a famous crystal making company in Austria.  This stamp has a fabric covered with many tiny Swarovski Crystals to produce a glittering effect for the fireworks.

The first stamp shows a panoramic night sky view of Victoria Harbour of Hong Kong city.  It is indeed a world famous natural harbour.

The second stamp features Giant Ferris Wheel, Vienna Prater Park, Austria. It is a hunting preserve for the aristocracy opened to the public in 1766.

You can clearly see the crystals in this close-up view. Each stamp set comes with it's own certificate of authenticity.

Luminous stamp : Hong Kong

                                                      

Hong Kong post has issued a miniature sheet on Chinese Dinosaurs on February 20th, 2014 which glows in the dark.  The miniature sheet is printed with a luminous effect which allows the unique features of the Chinese dinosaurs to glow in the dark.  Odd as it may seem, I was not aware of this fact till I stumbled on a write-up on the net.  Now that I have verified that it *does* glow in the dark, I am excited about this category of stamps.

3D stamp: Hong Kong

Recently I got a wonderful 3D stamp issued by Hong Kong Post.  Hong Post issued this stamp on the theme "Weather Phenomena" on 27th March 2014. This 3D stamp sheetlet bears the satellite image of the trajectory of typhoon Vicente when it approached Hong Kong in July 2012. Typhoon Vicente with gale-force winds and rain, shuttering much of the city and injuring at least 129 people caused Hong Kong city to raise its strongest typhoon warning for the first time in 13 years.

8th May: World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day.

May 8^th is World Red Cross and Red Crescent Day. Red Cross is an International humanitarian Movement founded to protect human life and health. It is celebrated on the occasion of the birth anniversary of the founder of the Red Cross movement Mr.Henry Dunant.  Did you know that the very first Nobel Peace Prize was awarded in the year 1901 to Henry Dunant and Frederic Passy? Since then, Red Cross has won the Nobel Prize in the years 1917, 1944 and in 1963.

The First Red Cross day was celebrated on 8^th May 1949.

The above stamp was issued by Hong Kong in the year 2013 to mark the 150th anniversary of the ICRC.  Perforations in the shape of a cross are used for the first time by Hong Kong Post to highlight the emblem of the ICRC.

The above First Day Cover was issued by Mauritius Post for the 150th Anniversary of the Red Cross.  You can see Henry Dunant, the founder of the Red Cross on the left top corner of the emblem.
