Lithuania's first Hologram stamp

Lithuania issued its first hologram stamp on 9th October 1998 to commemorate the 80th anniversary of Lithuania's first stamp.

On Feb. 16, 1918, Lithuania declared its independence from Russia.
The Lithuanian postal administration was founded on Nov. 16 of that year and the first stamp was issued on 27th December 1918.

Lithuania's first hologram stamp features "The Post Horn" emblem, emblem of Lithuania's postal administration.  H. Ratkevicius, is the designer of the stamp and his name appeares at the bottom of the stamp.  The border area is covered with peace dove carrying a letter and the 80th anniversary inscription.

Nice addition to my Odd and Unusual stamps collection.

Looking forward to see the centenary celebration stamp in 2018.

27th September : World Tourism Day

Tourism is one of the major determinant of a country's economy and development. Over the past few decades, tourism has been expanding rapidly due to a variety of factors, like advancement in Technology, boom in economy etc. Tourism has many sub categories under it for example, eco-tourism, educational tourism, sustainable tourism, religious tourism, medical tourism etc.

The United Nations World Tourism Organisation (UNWTO) on 15th September 2017 at their 22nd UNWTO conference took a major step to improving sustainable tourism by declaring 27th September as World Tourism day and 2017 as International Year of Sustainable tourism for development.

Sustainable development means development of the present without compromising the needs of the future generations.

Children's Day - Thailand

Thailand celebrates its children's day(Wan dek) on second Saturday in the month of January since 1955.  It is celebrated to create awareness about children's roles and responsibilities in the future of the country.

Each year it is celebrated with unique theme and slogan.

On this day, His majesty and Prime minister deliver speeches to the children of  Thailand.

On this day, children are allowed to visit, Government offices, Parliament, Military offices and other private and public institutions.  Almost all fun activities in amusement parks, game zones are free for the children on this day.

In 2013 Thailand  commemorated this event with a long sized stamp with cartoon characters wearing the 10 Asean countries (Brunei, cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, Philippines, Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam) national costume.

I am very thankful to Pinthip for sending this stamp on card.

USPS's First Thermochromic Ink stamp was released on June 20th, 2017 to
commemorate the August 21st Total Eclipse of the Sun.  The stamp has a black circle at the middle, when it is exposed to light/heat the image of the moon will appear.  Thermochromic inks are vulnerable to UV light and should be kept out of direct sunlight as much as possible to preserve this special effect.  Since the stamps on cover are travelling long way, they are exposed to sunlight and obviously they lose its special feature.  In order to preserve the Mint stamps USPS is providing some special envelopes at an extra cost.

Thanks a lot Arakan, USA for sending these stamps on cover.

8th June, World Ocean Day (WOD)

World Ocean Day(WOD) is celebrated on 8th June every year.  Ocean gives us everything .The oxygen we breath is mainly from oceans. We are not only getting food, pets, medicine, corals from oceans but also we are using ocean lanes for trading too.  But because of the global warming, over exploitation, over consumption of sea foods, oil spilling  we are loosing many marine creatures.   To remind humans that Oceans are the lungs of our body and create awareness and how to protect it from vulnerability, WOD is celebrated all around the world.

On 8th June, 1992 at the Earth Summit in Rio de JaneiroCanada proposed World Ocean Day.  But it was only on 5th December 2008, UN passed a resolution to observe 8th June as World Ocean Day.  Since then it gained its popularity and has been celebrated all over the world.

The theme for this year's (2017) WOD is "Our Oceans, Our Future".

The stamps shown was issued by India in the year 2009 as part of a joint issue(India Philippines joint issue).
