Mauritius: A Postal History ...

Mauritius was the fifth country to issue stamps. Mauritius issued its first  postage stamps on 22nd September 1847

The first stamps that were issued were indigo-blue colored stamps of a value of 2 pence and a bright red stamp worth one penny. About 500 copies of these stamps were printed.These two stamps are now on an exclusive exhibition in the Blue Penny Museum.

Here are a few stamps that I bought from the Mauritius post office which is located in the postal museum.

MAURITIUS IN  WORLD LITERATURE

The above sheetlet was issued in the year 2008 depicting the images of famous novelists like Bernardin de St Pierre,Alexandre Dumas,Joseph Conrad,Mark Twain,Charles Bandelaire who visited Mauritius between the 18th and 19th centuries.


MAURITIUS SHIP MODELS


Mauritius is famous for its ship models that are made by various artists and are sold at Curepipe in Mauritius.The above sheetlet was issued in the year 2005 depicting a picture of a boy making a ship.

MAURITIAN GIANT TORTOISE

Because of many reasons Giant Tortoises are becoming extinct. A few varieties of these tortoises can now be found in Mauritius and Rodrigues. The above sheetlet was issued in the year 2009 showing the picture of a giant Tortoises.

BICENTENARY OF MAHEBOURG 1806-2006



 Mahé de Laboudonnais was a French Governor of Isle de France and whose name was given to Mahebourg, and  the successor of Laboudonnais, Isidore Decaen, who created Mahebourg. This sheetlet was issued in the year 2006 portraying  Mahé de Laboudonnais and Isidore Decaen.

MAURITIUS IN WORLD HERITAGE



The year 2011 was World Heritage year. Mauritius issued this sheetlet in the year 2011 and depicts the picture of Aapravasi Ghat (the steps and kitchen) and the Le Morne (mountain and monument) which are a few heritage sites of Mauritius.

MAURITIAN DODO



Dodo is now an extinct bird. People say that the last Dodo was in Mauritius and researchers could find only one complete skeleton of the Dodo.The above sheetlet was issued in the year 2007 depicting the picture of a dodo.              
240 YEARS OF POSTAL SERVICES IN MAURITIUS 1772-2012



The above sheetlet issued in the year 2012 depicts the picture of  blue penny  and red penny. Blue penny and Red penny were the first stamps issued in Mauritius depicting the image of Queen Victoria.




The above First Day Cover was issued in the year 2012 depicting the pictures of Delivery of mail bags by van, express letter messenger, inland mail arrival, foot messenger. This stamp was the first 'tete beche' issued in Mauritius.

     SITES AND MONUMENTS OF MAURITIUS



The above First Day Cover was issued in the year 2013 depicting the picture of Prison de Belle Mare , Chateau de Bel Ombre , IBL Building-Bowen Square , Le Batelage . these are historical sites and monuments of Mauritius.
                                             
MAURICE ILE DURABLE AND  150TH ANNIVERSARY OF RED CROSS




The above First Day Cover was issued in the year 2013 depicting the stamps of Solar Energy , Wind Energy , Henri Dunant. Maurice Ile Durable is a foundation that mainly concentrates on saving energy, environment, economy, education and equity. Henri Dunant was the founder of Red Cross in Geneva. This stamp was issued for the 150th Anniversary of Red Cross.

FAUNA AND FLORA OF MAURITIUS



The above First Day Cover was issued this year (2014) depicting the flora and fauna of Mauritius. The stamps are Dragon Fly and Roussette de Rodrigues for fauna and Pignon d' Inde for flora.




The above First Day Cover was issued in the year 2013 depicting the flora and fauna of Mauritius. The stamps show the pictures of Hurricane Palm, Orchid  for flora and Mascarene Swallow for fauna.


INTERNATIONAL YEAR OF COOPERATIVES



The above stamp was issued in the year 2012 which is the year of cooperatives in Mauritius. The stamp shows the image of many people lifting a cube.

100 YEARS OF SCOUTING IN MAURITIUS



This stamp was issued in the year 2012 depicting the picture of the scout symbol and under it the slogan - SCOUTING - A BRIGHTER FUTURE FOR YOUTH.

40 YEARS OF DIPLOMATIC RELATIONS BETWEEN  MAURITIUS AND CHINA



This stamp was issued in the year 2012 depicting the picture of Mauritius and China's National Flag .the above stamp was issued for the 40 years of relations between the Republic of Mauritius and China.


SIR SEEWOOSAGUR RAMGOOLAM



The above stamp was issued in the year 2010 depicting the image of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam, the father of the nation of Mauritius .The image of Sir Seewoosagur Ramgoolam is made of gold so the stamp is worth 100 MUR (MAURITIAN RUPEE ) 

  LAW DAY IN MAURITIUS  







The above stamps were issued in the year 2012 for Law Day . the above stamps depict the pictures of Sir Michel Rivalland, Chief Justice (1967-1970), Grand Port District Court, Interior of Court of Justice, The Gavel.
